Ultrasonic assisted tungsten inert gas (U-TIG) welding is a newly developed arc welding method. During the process, extraneous ultrasonic vibration imposed directly on the welding arc and interacted with the plasma. High speed camcorder system was employed to study the arc shape. The results showed that the arc was compressed by the ultrasonic and its stability and stiffness were evidently improved. U-TIG and conventional TIG welding of 4.5mm thickness aluminum alloy were experimentally studied. Compared with conventional TIG welding, the U-TIG welding provides higher efficiency and better quality. The U-TIG penetration was increased up to 200%. At the meanwhile, the crystal grain of U-TIG welded beam was refined evidently, and the porosity decreased with the cracks eliminated, all of these were attributed to the introduction of the ultrasonic vibration in the weld pool.
