Mechanical equipments are designed for a definite life which is decided at the design stage itself. Operating beyond the design life calls for a comprehensive health assessment programs using the latest inspection techniques and advanced NDT methods. The coke chambers in a DCU undergo cyclic thermal stresses during the coking and decoking operation every 48 hours leading to development of cracks by thermal fatigue phenomenon. The surface cracks of the coke chambers skirt to shell weld joints were inspected using the WFMPT (wet fluorescent magnetic particle testing), DP testing methods. PA-UT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) was used to detect any subsurface defects. The detected discontinuities were repaired in-house by developing repair methodology and implementing this repair methodology successfully for safe operation of the coke chambers.
