State-of-the-art supercritical boiler technology and comparative technical study with subcritical boiler

Supercritical technology was first developed in the U.S. in the 1950's. The technology was adopted in Japan in the 1960's, has been refined and is now utilized for all large capacity boilers. Over 100 supercritical units are in operation in Japan and the oldest units are now over 40 years. The supercritical technology has surpassing drum type boilers with its high efficiency, flexibility in operation and remarkably high availability in Japan. These matured technologies realized to come back again to supercritical pressure steam condition in United States and Canada. The technology can also be applicable to oil fired projects using high sulfur fuel with the same level of the reliability. Development of high strength materials in high temperature regions with attractive cost performance has enhanced high temperature corrosion resistance characteristics for high sulfur fuel. Application of supercritical steam parameter will contribute to provide not only stable and high quality electricity but also better solution for the global environmental protection from an economical point of view. In this presentation, we would like to explain about the advanced technology and reliability of the supercritical technology and show comparative technical study with subcritical boiler (drum boiler).
