A new chemical process to recover uranium from loaded amines is described.The process is suitable for the recovery of uranium from acidic leach liquorsby solvent extraction with amines and is potentially a viable alternative to theammonia and strong acid strip processes. Stripping of uranium is achievedwithout the addition of external reagents for pH control, which eliminatesthe risk of localised uranium precipitation in mixers. This issue is prevalentwith ammonia stripping. The process generates loaded strip liquor that issuitable for uranium recovery by conventional precipitation using hydrogenperoxide, albeit without the addition of external reagents for pH control.The process requires the use of a relatively benign matrix solution, whichprovides the hydroxide ions necessary for stripping and precipitation.Expensive and/or hazardous reagents, such as ammonia, strong sulfuricacid or sodium carbonate, are not required. The main reagent consumed islimestone, which is used for sulfate removal from the strip solution bleedstream via the precipitation of gypsum.
