This paper analyzed the climate characteristic and influencing factors of fog and haze in Beijing area. The results showed that the variations of fog and haze days had obvious two-stage characteristics. Between 1980 and 1996, fog days varied with a significant upward trend, while between 1997 and 2010 were with significant downtrend. Haze days decreased in each of the two stages, but after 1997, the average haze days were still higher than that before 1996. Besides, monthly fog days changed significantly, highest from October to December, but monthly haze days were relatively uniform. From the view of spatial distribution, fog and haze had serious influence to the southeast of Beijing area, but had the least influence on the northwest. A case of a sustained fog and haze from November 3 to 8 2009 was examined for a detailed analysis of the influencing factors. The increase of PM2.5 concentration was the main factors reducing haze visibility at the beginning stage in which haze dominated; while relative humidity was the main factors leading to low visibility during the next stage when haze changed into heavy fog. Fog/haze dissipated due to the intrusion of northern cold air.
