The interaction of the flotation collectors, the sodium compounds of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and dibutyldithiophosphate (DTP), at copper and gold surfaces were studied in situ utilising surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrochemical techniques. DTP~- was observed at the surface of Cu over the potential range investigated, and CuDTP formed at potentials exceeding -0.6 V. Cyclic voltammograms of DTP" at Cu indicated that some decomposition of the reagent also occurred. At gold, DTP was not observed at the surface at underpotentials to dithiophosphatagen (DTP)_2 formation. After the initial cycle, decomposition products were observed at Au. MBT" was observed at both Cu and Au over the entire potential ranges investigated, although 2-mercaptobenzothiazole disulphide (MBT)_2 was not readily observed.
