Froth Flotation is one of the most common separation technique within the mineral processing industry. It is considered as a hetero-coagulation process, in which the target particles form aggregates with air bubbles in the pulp. These aggregates are carried to the froth phase at the top of the flotation cell, from which they can be extracted into the concentrate. Gangue particles remain in the flotation pulp and end up in the tailings of the process. The formation of the particle-bubble aggregates is selective to the wettability of the particle surface, which can be controlled by the addition of flotation reagents. The flotation behaviour of a single particle can be described as a super composition of different sub processes whereby each of the processes has its own probability. These processes include the collision between the particle and the bubble, the attachment of the particle to the bubble and the stability of the formed particle - bubble aggregate. The overall probability for a particle to float can be calculated by the multiplication of the single probabilities of the different sub processes (Yoon 2000; Pyke et al. 2003; Dobby und Finch 1987; AHMED und JAMESON 1989).
