Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness is accompanied in many cases by various symptoms and signs of ocular surface disease, which are related to a pathological condition of any of the parts of the "Ocular Surface System". The occurrence of ocular surface disease in glaucoma has been mainly linked to the long-term treatment with topical intraocular pressure-lowering medications, most of which are preserved with benzalkonium chloride (BAK). Other reasons include the active ingredient and the glaucoma itself. In the management of patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension a reduction of eye drop-induced toxicity is needed, as well as a specific treatment for glaucoma patients also suffering from ocular surface disease.
