For many industries managing safety, availability and cost is a tricky balance, so how can they all be optimised? The methodology of asset integrity management (AIM) in combination with risk-based inspection (RBI) allows asset components to be prioritised based on an integrity risk and cost-effectiveness evaluation. This can ensure a focussed management solution for optimised expenditure to ensure safe operation and improved performance. This paper describes the methodology of AIM and RBI in relation to a case study on submarine tailshafts. Managing safety, availability and maintenance spend is critical in any industry where equipment is involved. This paper will explore how robust AIM methodologies and experience can be transferred to other industries to add value and result in improved outcomes.
