Single-County District Groundwater Quality Studies

Understanding the water quality of our regional aquifers provides insights to understanding groundwater movement and is essential for establishing groundwater protection programs. While water level and groundwater production data are readily available for most major aquifers, recent water quality data for regional aquifers is often limited. To improve understanding of their regional aquifers, Fayette County Groundwater Conservation District (GCD) and Pecan Valley GCD (DeWitt County) asked Daniel B. Stephens & Associates, Inc. (DBS&A) to design and conduct county-wide groundwater studies in each of these two counties. For both of these single-county districts, existing water quality data was generally limited to that from past studies conducted by the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB). TWDB has conducted numerous county-wide groundwater studies throughout Texas, many of which include detailed groundwater quality evaluations. However, most of these studies are over 40 yr old, and few large-scale studies of groundwater quality within individual counties have been done since then. For Fayette and DeWitt counties, there have been changes in population (both number and distribution), changes in industry, and changes in natural resource development during the last 40 to 50 yr, during which only sporadic and localized groundwater quality sampling has occurred. Both groundwater conservation districts wanted newer data regarding general groundwater quality in their aquifers, as well as more detailed data to help evaluate potential impacts to groundwater sources from industry, mining and agriculture, and additional baseline data to help evaluate any potential impacts in the future.
