Discovering Knowledge Nuggets in Financial Data: The Case of a Financial Services Institution

摘要

The success stories of organisations that have been transformed through the application of business intelligence are numerous and well documented. However, there are many organisations that have made significant investments in these technologies without the expected returns. What organisations must understand is that the application of the analytics itself is a small part of the process and if the expected results are to be realized a more structured process model must be followed. The most common approach is the KDDM process model, which includes a very important data preparation stage. Although the steps of these structured processes are well defined, in some cases, especially as it relates to data preparation, there are additional techniques that can be used to harness greater value from the data. These techniques are not well documented and this paper seeks to help fill this void by demonstrating what can be done in the data preparation stage to increase the value of the analytics. As more focus is placed on the importance of following a process model and on demonstrating the power of data preparation techniques the more likely it is that organisations will gain greater returns on their investments in their analytics investments.
