Wood guardrail posts are among the most common wood materials currently used in highway construction in the United States. Preservative treated hem-fir is an important species for guard-rail applications in the western United States. The service lifeof treated timber post guardrail systems has been estimated to be between 10-20 years which is extremely short in comparison with published field trials. However, there is surprisingly little information on performance these materials. The condition of chromated copper arsenate treated hem-fir guardrail posts removed from a project near Bellingham, WA was assessed by removing increment cores to measure preservative treatment, flexural testing to determine residual material properties and dissection to assess the degree of internal decay. Posts that met the AWPA Standards for preservative penetration trended to have lower levels of internal decay after 20 years in service and 86 of the 92 posts tested retained sufficient flexural properties to meet AASHTO Standards. The results indicated that guardrail posts continued to perform well even after 20 years of service in an environment with a moderately high decay risk.
