Iron-based catalysts have been a preferred industrial choice for producing ultra-clean motor fuels from coal by the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) process due to their high activity for both FTS and water-gas shift (WGS) reactions and relatively low cost compared with other transition metal-based catalysts. Large amounts of hydrogen produced through WGS on the Fe catalysts make up for the hydrogen deficit in the low H2/CO ratio syngas commonly derived from coal, significantly enhancing hydrocarbon productivity. Recent research efforts have been devoted to developing high performance Fe catalysts suitable for slurry phase operation [1-3].
