Soils and sediments are mainly of concern in this work for two reasons: firstly, because a Brazilian quality criteria for soils and sediments is available, and secondly, due to the geochemical behavior of As in these media, which might allow its transference to the drinking water, the major environmental route of exposure to the human population. This work evaluated As levels in these matrixes and made considerations on its geochemical distribution subsequently site-specific environmental and geological gold mining characteristics. 70% of soil samples and 90% of sediment samples are above the legal values established by Brazilian legislation for As. The As levels are influenced by the distance from the ore body and the deactivated gold mining activities.
