摘要

Over 3,000,000,000 people around the world consume rice as a staple at 100 s g/day in contrast to soil, which other than for those engaging in geophagia, typically of clay, is typically only inadvertently consumed at or below the 100 mg/day level. Furthermore, the bio-accessibility of inorganic arsenic in rice is much higher than that in many soils. Notwithstanding this, in the European Union, even newly introduced regulation for arsenic in polished rice is much less demonstrably protective of public health than is regulation of arsenic in soils. A somewhat smaller discrepancy exists between regulatory values for water and soil. Possible reasons and implications for this discrepancy are explored and discussed.
