摘要

This paper is intended to interpret the veranda as an intermediate space in the Vietnamese vernacular house and to explore lessons for contemporary residential building design.Eight cases of vernacular house scattered from north to south of Vietnam are selected to analyze the general characteristics of veranda space.The study found that veranda space was primarily formed from responding to immediate climate.Veranda is also a fundamental space as a critical chain of transition from interior to exterior space and enhances social activities.Contemporary apartment buildings in Vietnam have been recently erected on the reference of Western modernity without notice of the traditional lifestyle.The result of this research could be utilized as information and guidelines for designing contemporary housing.
