Sugarcane cultivars differ in photosynthetic efficiency and leaf area index (LAI) and consequently in total dry matter (TDM) production. However, in Kenya the relationships between LAI, TDM production and final cane yield (TCH) are not well understood.The trial was planted at two locations, Kenya Sugar Research Foundation (KESREF) -Kibos and Mumias.The objectives were to investigate how LAI and TDM are related to cane yield and how LAI and TDM are related to each other.Three sugarcane cultivars C0945, EAK73-335 and KEN83-737 were planted at two different row spacings (1.2 m and 1.5 m) in June and September 2011. Plots measured 6.0 m x 10 m. The experimental design was a split-split plot arranged in randomised completeblock with three replications. The experiment was harvested at 17 months after planting (MAP).The data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). Mean LAI increased throughout the growing period. LAI was poorly related to TCH (r~2 = 0.03-0.05) early and there was improvement towards maturity (r~2 = 0.15-0.44).The relationship between TDM and TCH was also low (r~2 = 0.04-0.16). The relationship between LAI and TDM production was significant and stronger than that between TDM and TCH.Results indicate that TDM can be used for variety selection as LAI and the relationship between LAI and TDM was strong. Knowledge of this is important for crop management and variety selection.
