In this work we are outlining the major considerations for wind turbine selection for projects in Thailand and the Philippines. Both countries have regional climate and wind regime specifics and are analyzed separately. Mott MacDonald has been assisting in various phases in the majority of the operational wind farm capacity in the region. In this work we aim at reflecting the regional insights and use them in the context of a broader discussion on the selection of optimal wind turbine technology. One of the main considerations for wind turbine selection in Thailand is the available wind resource, which is generally in the lower end of the international range. To develop viable wind energy projects, developers have to maximize the energy yields by utilizing the advantages of the latest development of wind turbine technology. The current trend of large rotor diameters and hub heights, which give greater efficiency in low wind speeds, is one of the main routes towards this goal. The planning phase requires careful analysis of the benefits of increased energy production weighed against the increased cost of larger blades and higher towers.
