The recently approved IED (Industrial Emission Directive) imposes very challenging limits for NOx emissions produced by gas turbine power plants fed by light distillate oil. Several retrofit options were evaluated to make eight GE 6FA oil-fired gas turbines, operated by Endesa Generacion (belonging to the Enel Group) in the Spanish islands, compliant with the above mentioned emission limits. These engines are equipped with the MNQC (Multi Nozzle Quiet Combustor) combustion system with water injection into the combustion chamber for NOx emission control. A pilot combustion test campaign was performed in 2014 at full-pressure full-scale conditions in the Sesta facility to preliminarily tune the water injection system for achieving the compliance with IED limit and assessing the consequent effect on combustion performances. The new water injection setting was then implemented in the control system of the gas turbine unit #3 of the Granadilla power plant (Tenerife, Spain) and a validation test in the new configuration was successfully conducted in 2015. This paper discusses the test results with particular focus on the effect of the water-to-fuel ratio on emissions, combustion dynamics and engine operability.
