Soil contaminated with heavy metals is a serious environmental problem. Generally, organic contaminants in soil are biodegradable, whereas heavy metals could not be decomposed by biogeochemical processes. There are many military bases in Korea due to historical and political-geographical reasons. Some military operations of these bases, such as arm training activities, have significantly contributed in heavy metal contaminated soil problems. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for the remediation of soil contaminated with heavy metals. Citric acid has been investigated, as a leach reagent, to dissolve heavy metals from contaminated soil, and the leaching efficiency using citric acid depends on the chemical and mineralogical forms. Weathered form such as carbonate and oxide was leached with citric acid whereas metal form was not dissolved. The leaching efficiency of Pb with citric acid was improved by adding hydrogen peroxide because the metal form of Pb could be oxidized with hydrogen peroxide.
