As a representative of the third generation solar cells, dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been attracting considerable attention due to their low cost, easy fabrication, and high power conversion efficiency. As an important component in a DSSC, an efficient counter electrode would possess both excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of oxidized electrolyte and high conductivity for electron transfer from the external circuit to the electrolyte. Platinum is usually exploited as a counter electrode in DSSCs due to its excellent activity and conductivity. However, its practical application will be limited by its high cost and rare source. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient Pt free counter electrodes for DSSCs.
