This presentation will draw together recent research on the conversion of biomass to liquids to consider the limiting factors on yields and the extent of oxygen removal that can be achieved where high hydrogen pressures are not employed. The combination of hydrogen pressures over ca. 10 MPa and suitable dispersed catalysts, such as sulphided Mo, results in conversions of close to 100% for all biomass fuels. Indeed, hydropyrolysis has been developed as an analytical pyrolysis method to determine pyrolytic or "black" carbon on environmental matrices based on the ability to remove all labile organic matter reductively.
