Assessment of biofuel potential from Agave spp. and Salicornia in the arid Emirate of Abu Dhabi

The arid Emirate of Abu Dhabi has committed to the replace of aviation fossil-based fuel by biojetfuel in the near future. Agave and Salicornia are known to grow in the harsh environment of Abu Dhabi. Since both are interesting candidates for the production of bioethanol, and its further conversion into bio-jet fuel. The present work objective was to estimate the energy return on investment (EROI) of a bioethanol process plant, considering these two raw materials, Agave and Salicornia. The assessment considered the energy inputs and outputs of the following items; irrigation, fertilizer, water desalination, ethanol and biogas production processes. EROI is defined as the ratio of total energy output over total energy input. EROI results were 0.14 and 2.4 for Agave and Salicornia, respectively. This shows that the Salicornia based bioethanol is preferable in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi even though the Agave presents a better bioethanol yield than Salicornia, 6,750 L/ha versus 935 L/ha, respectively. This is due to the fact that the halophilic Salicornia does not require desalinated water for cultivation and it grows on the coast which is naturally irrigated by the sea water hence it saves fresh water and energy. Perspectives are focused on the techno-economic assessment of bioethanol conversion to biojet-fuel technologies, and the assessment of other types of energy crops able to thrive in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
