Lignin was extracted from residues in bioethanol production with hardwood by alkaline (AIL) and organosolv (Acid-OSL, Alkali-OSL) treatment under mild condition, for use as a phenol replacement in phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. The isolated lignins were analyzed for chemical composition and structure by FTIR and 1H-NMR. The isolated lignin was modified to prepare lignin-phenol-formaldehyde adhesives using two steps of methylolation and phenolation with various ratios of substitution (5-40%). The bonding strength of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde (LPF) adhesives was determined and their physical-chemical characterization was investigated to compare with PF adhesive.
