Prior to 1st April 2011 the provision of public transport and the control of the road network of Greater Manchester was shared between the AGMA members and the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE). On 1st April 2011 the GMPTE became Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), a new regional transport body for Greater Manchester that forms part of the new Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA). TfGM is the second most powerful and influential combined transport authority in England after Transport for London, uniting previously splintered governance over transport policy under one body.
