Replacement gilt entry into existing sow groups requires estrus expression within a narrow window to maintain integrity of the breeding group. This integrity allows for precision in the timing of important management procedures for the group during gestation, farrowing and at weaning. Methods that improve the timing of gilt entry are limited but include use of the estrus synchronization product, Matrix (Merck Animal Health). In combination with synchronized estrus, induction of ovulation for synchronized ovulation in gilts may be possible and would be beneficial for improving the synchrony of breeding in replacement gilts. This experiment was performed to examine the relationships between estrus and ovulation following Matrix treatment and to evaluate the effects of dose and timing of the GnRH agonist, triptorelin, for inducing ovulation in Matrix synchronized gilts.
