Because no antiviral drug has been developed for cats infected with feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1), veterinarians frequently "borrow" drugs developed for treating herpesviruses of humans. This session summarizes investigations regarding the in vitro efficacy of antiherpetic drugs against FHV-1 and their safety and efficacy when used in cats. The goal is to enable the reader to be better placed to make evidence-based decisions regarding antiviral therapy in FHV-1-infected cats. Although numerous antiviral agents have been used to treat cats infected with FHV-1, and each has some specific features, some general comments regarding these agents are also possible. We will start with those.
