The possibility of treating plant effluents for the main purpose of recycling, as well as external reuse as irrigation water or discharge into rivers, is a matter of growing interest to the mineral/metallurgical industry. In the present paper we discuss the importance of employing clean oxidants such as O_2, H_2O_2, O_3, and active oxygen species HO* and 1O_2 for the treatment of waters with the objective of in-plant recycling. Such class of clean oxidants do not leave residuals other than H_2O and O_2 in the treated waters or effluents; hence do not contribute to the building up of extraneous elements in closed hydric circuits. Other chemicals that aid in achieving neutralization, precipitation, and controlling treatment process variables, chemicals such as Fe sulfate, calcium hydroxide (lime)and sodium hydroxide may have to be employed in conjunction with oxidants, and their doses have to be minimized in order to limit build up of added elements in the closed circuits. Examples of performance of clean oxidants are presented for the oxidative treatment of cyanides and sulfide in effluents; and removal of elements Cu, Fe, Mn, and As by precipitation.
