Juvenile Wood: Investigation into Factors Affecting Treating

This paper is a continuing discussion concerning the treatability of southern pine. In 2011, Mr. Richard (Rich) Ziobro, a V.P., and the former global research director of Osmose, now d/b/a Koppers Performance Chemicals (KPC), asked me to investigate issues surrounding juvenile wood in southern yellow pine. He had noted that recent samples coming in from their treaters had shown lack of 100% sapwood penetration in both solubilized and micronized-dispersed copper-containing systems. An internal white paper was generated, but work has continued over the last few years, including giving a small research grant to Mr. Larkin and Dr. Laks, at Michigan Technological University (MTU), for additional independent treating and juvenile wood research. This paperand presentation reflect a small portion of the treating implications concerning juvenile wood in conifers, with a focus on the southern pines.
