摘要

The SHOPERA research project addresses the risk for ships to be underpowered after satisfying the EEDI guidelines. The risk of underpowerment manifests especially in loss of maneuverability during adverse weather conditions and in confined waters. The Delft University ofTechnology took part in the SHOPERA project with main focus on the development of simplified models of engine dynamics for typical types of engines, to be implemented in the ship motion simulation tools. The dynamic behavior of a 2-stroke diesel engine was modeled and simulated in the aforementioned off-design high loads. It has been shown through the Mean Value First Principle (MVFP) simulations that the diesel engines depending on their turbocharging method are suffering from thermal overloading and shut-downs in part load. The opportunity of further developing the performance of the same engine and also protecting it from the said risks in heavier loads is presented.
