Mastitis is the most economically important disease of dairy cows which accounts for 38% of the total direct costs of the common production disease of dairy cows (Kossaibati and Esslemont, 1997). Of diverse microbial species that can infect mammary gland, S. aureus is the most frequent cause of mastitis (Oliver and Mitchell, 1984). A national dairy health survey indicated that 89.4% operations used intramammary antimicrobials and 93.0% of cows in all dairy farms use antibiotic based dry cow-therapy (USDA, 2014b). Unexpectedly, the intensive antibiotic treatment approach to control contagious pathogens has resulted in an increased evolution of environmental mastitis pathogens (Oliver and Mitchell, 1984). Because of severe economic consequences of mastitis and availability of antibiotics without a veterinarian's prescription, most farmers could not wait until the submitted laboratory samples identification and susceptibility test results are available to them (Refsdal, 2000) for treatment. Such practices would increase selection pressure on the pathogens towards antimicrobial resistance development resulting in less efficacy or failure of the treatments. Regular antimicrobial susceptibility testing is very important as it guides to select an effective antimicrobial for treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance patterns of S. aureus isolated from cases of bovine mastitis in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky.
