Status evaluation of edaphic fluorine in high section of groundwater in southwest of Shandong Province, China

A study was carried out to determine fluoride concentration in groundwater and analyze the correlation with the local surface soils of Caoxian situated in southwestern Shandong Province of China. Fluoride concentrations were determined in 96 groundwater samples collected from wells and 34 soil samples collected from farmlands using a fluoride electrode and an ion selective meter. The results showed that fluoride concentrations varied from 0.15 to 4.32 mg/L with 35.41% of the shallow wells above the World Health Organisation (WHO) maximum permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L. The concentration of F in most parts of shallow aquifer were greater than 1.00 mg/L, locally greater than 4.0 mg/L with mean value of 1.26 mg/L. The distribution of high F groundwater was porphyritic distribution or banded distribution. And the total fluoride in surface soils varied from 325.75 to 574.25 mg/kg with a mean value of 459.39 mg/kg, while soil water-soluble fluorine varied from 4.44 to 19.50 mg/kg with a mean value of 9.91 mg/kg. Soil water-soluble fluorine was a higher level than normal value, the ratio of soil water-soluble fluoride and total fluoride was also significantly higher than national average. High soil water-soluble fluoride was the major reason for high fluoride groundwater.
