The use of industrial wood pellets in utility scale pulverized coal boilers provides reliable baseload low-carbon power generation. At a low co-firing rate that lowers carbon emissions by 10% versus 100% coal, the increased total cost of generation is below one cent per kWh7 . Any scheme that increases the cost of generation must have the support of policy. In the countries that are co-firing or full-firing pellets in power plants, governmental policies aimed at lowering overall carbon emissions include either subsidies to the generators or the ability to avoid penalties such as carbon taxes. Either way, the policies incentivize the generators to move to renewable power. The transition from high carbon intensity generation to low carbon intensity generation in those countries that have policies in place is driven by a recognition of the impacts of increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere are having on the current and future climate. The chart below shows two time series: the left axis and the thick line show metric tonnes per year of CO2 released and the right axis and thinner line show the temperature anomalies around the historical norm.
