While renewables and fossil fuels are often seen as an “either-or” situation, there are several key instances where they work well together and can provide mutual benefit. With the increasing need for distributed generation and energy security, there is a strong drive for micro-grids which can incorporate a range of power generators. There are now more risks to the grid from both sabotage and weather disruption events which would require the use of micro-grids to provide backup. Micro-grids are transitioning from a curiosity to a necessity in several applications. Some of the key applications which can benefit from multi-sourced micro-grids are: telecom towers, desalination plants, oil & gas delivery systems that need cathodic corrosion protection, urban crisis centers, as well as village electrification. The common theme is that a mix of renewables, along with fossil fuel cogen, and batteries, can provide a low cost, scalable, and effective solution. This paper will cover the cost benefits for a mix of renewables and diesel/gas and provide specific examples for the cases listed. Specifically, for off-grid telecom, the cost and implementation advantages of solar/diesel will be spelled out. For oil & gas pipelines, the use of mixed energy micro-grids will be discussed in the context of efficient cost savings. The author is part of an international team which has developed micro-grids for rural village electrification and telecom. The lessons learned provide a context to better understand the trade-offs for cost, sizing, and mix. Various case studies will be presented, as well as a discussion on methodology to determine the appropriate mix.
