One potential raw material is corn stalk with a composition of 34.4% lignin, 33.1% cellulose, 28.9% hemicellulose. The stages of making activated carbon begin with sample preparation namely cleaning, washing, drying and refining. Corn stalks will be processed with 2 stages of carbonization. The first stage will experience carbonization at 500°C for 1 and half hour. In the second stage will be carried out variations of activator agents while varying activation temperatures with the aim of getting the best carbon characteristics. The char produced from carbonization step will be activated chemically and will be mixed with 25% b/v KOH and NaOH solution with a weight ratio of 1: 4.2. Then proceed with physics-chemical activation using gas N_2 with a flow rate of 300 ml / second in a temperature furnace reactor varied in the range 650-750°C. Characterization of activated carbon was carried out using the iodine number test, Scanning Electron Microscopy test, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy test. The best characteristics of activated carbon are measured by Iodine numbers to represent surface area. The variation in temperature resulting in iodine numbers is directly proportional for activation by KOH, but precisely inversely with NaOH. The best activated carbon was produced by chemical activation with KOH at temperature of 750°C with an overall yield of 24.3%. and Iodine number of 602 mgI_2/g.
