Surface basalt fibers were modified with different silanes to generate different polyorganosiloxane coatings. Polyxiloxane were grafted on the fiber surface after removing the original sizing with a calcination process and subsequent activation process for surface silanol regeneration. Morphology and structural studies were carried out by SEM and FTIR analysis, respectively. The silanized basalt fibers were labelled with fluorescein 5-isothiocyanate and immersed in different aqueous solutions at pH=7 in order to study the hydrolytical degradation of the polysiloxane. The hydrolysis phenomena were monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy at different temperatures to subsequently study the kinetics of the process.
