The spindle system of ordinary CNC lathe is a complex structure which could cause additional static, dynamic and heat loads during machining. In this study, a novel spindle system with shorten transmission link is used to reduce power consumption and improve machining performance. A series of models have been established for the spindle improvement, such as bearing forces, bending moment, and deflection of spindle. A comparison analysis on the machining characteristic of lathe with the two spindle systems is investigated. Improvements are presented mainly on machining efficiency and cutting capability. Finally, the improved shorten spindle system could substitute the ordinary spindle system for its high cutting efficiency and low cost.
