Mastitis is usually treated empirically rather than based on test results. Farmers can treat mastitic dairy cows more targeted if they know whether or which mastitis pathogen is involved, because not all pathogens need to be treated with antibiotics.Multiple studies investigated how to transform test results into treatment or management decisions, since numerous tests do not inform directly on the involved pathogen. For example, somatic cell count peaks could indicate specific mastitis pathogens, information that can be used in herd level management decisions (Haas et al. 2004). Additionally, Californian Mastitis Test scores and somatic cell count can be used to select individual cows for bacteriological culture (BC) (Sargeant et al. 2001).
