Clinical mastitis, retained placenta and clinical metritis in periparturient heifers might be relatively high in some farms. Many factors may contribute to increase the risk of these diseases. Among those factors, negative energy balance, impaired immune response, and challenging environment management, are present in many Argentinean farms. Some authors demonstrated the efficacy of intramammary antimicrobial metaphylaxis (Oliver et al., 2003) or internal teat sealants (Parker et al, 2008) in precalving heifers to cure or prevent mastitis. However, the infusion of intramammary compounds in precalving heifers might pose a logistical challenge for some farms. The usage of antimicrobials in precalving animals might result in antimicrobials residues after calving. Pegbovigrastim has no withdrawal period and has shown efficacy on immune-related diseases, such as mastitis, retained placenta and metritis (Ruiz et al., 2017). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Pegbovigrastim (Imrestor, Elanco Animal Health) on mastitis, retained placenta and metritis during the transition period and its effect in milk yield in the first 30 DIM.
