Mastitis is a multi-faceted problem, and its prevalence can be attributed to problems with herd and farm management, milking management, the milking machine, and the cow itself. Many herd-level risk factors for mastitis such as season, climate, and management have already been identified1'2, but identifying cow-level risk factors can improve our understanding of mastitis etiology. Indeed, many of the cow factors already identified pertain specifically to the immune response of the animal, stage in lactation, parity, teat dimensions, or the adverse effect of the milking machine on the teats3'4-5. The focus of our study was on high SCC and clinical mastitis risk associated with physical traits of the cow; namely teat and udder conformation. The aim ofour study was to identify cow-level risk factors associated with the occurrence of high SCC and clinical mastitis, regardless of environmental or contagious pathogen responsible for disease development. Identifying cow-level risk factors for mastitis might offer farmers an effective and inexpensive tool to manage mastitis.
