摘要

Sand aprons in the southern Great Barrier Reef are relict sedimentary deposits that presently receive negligible sediment input. The main reason for that seems to be that wave dissipation over the fore reef and reef flat is too high to allow any meaningful sediment transport into the lagoon and sand aprons. Here we present a summary of our comprehensive studies on sand apron sedimentation taking into account sea level fluctuations during the Holocene. We hypothesize the existence of a Goldilocks sea level for sand apron formation and progradation, during which wave energy dissipation over the fore reef and reef flat is such that it still allows sediment transport into the lagoon. Sediments in coral reefs are produced by healthy coral and other organisms; therefore, the Goldilocks window of sand apron formation and progradation must coincide with the suitable environmental conditions.
