Effects of pressure on the torrefaction process using self-heating of dairy manure

To reduce the energy consumption of torrefaction, a torrefaction process employing self-heating of cattle manure was considered. We investigated the effects of ambient pressure on (i) the initiating temperature causing self-heating of wet cattle manure and (ii) the fuel properties of torrefied manure prepared at 250 °C. The results showed that the initiating temperature decreased from 160 to 95 °C when the pressure was elevated from 0.1 to 1.0 MPa. Also, self-heating of dry manure was induced at 125 °C and 1.0 MPa, suggesting that self-heating was promoted not only by pressurization but also by free water in the material. Fuel properties of the torrefied manure were also affected by the ambient pressure. With the increase ofpressure, mass and energy yields, and elemental O content of the products were decreased, whereas ash and elemental C contents were increased. The elemental composition of the manure was altered to that ofpeat at 0.1 MPa and that of lignite at 0.4 to 1.0 MPa. As for calorificvalue, the higher hearing value on a dry basis showed a decreasing trend due to the increase in ash content, while that on a dry and ash-free basis increased as the pressure increased.
