摘要

The objective of this study was to assess the impact of one of tannin-rich legumes, Leucaena leucocephala, on laetating small ruminant performance. To do this, twenty two late pregnant Blaekbelly ewes (17 days before lambing) were randomly divided into two groups. First group received mixed diet consist of hay + 750 g of leucaena pellets + 1000 g of green banana, for the second group, leucaena was replaced by alfalfa pellets as a control diet. After lambing, animals were divided into four groups to feed alfalfa, alfalfa+banana, leucaena, leucaena+banana in present of hay for all animals. No significant differences were observed on dry matter intake, milk production (632 vs 582 ml), weight loss (0.16 vs 1.69 kg) and lambs daily weight gain (201 vs 193.4 g/day) for alfalfa vs leucaena comparisons with a slight decrease of colostrum production (430 vs 324 ml) for the leucaena (P=0.124). The presence of banana in leucaena and alfalfa diets did not show a significant effect on the studied parameters. Itwas concluded that leucaena could replace alfalfa in rations with no depressive effect on laetating ewe's performance.
