The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of inclusion of rice grain silage (RGS) and wood kraft pulp (KP) in a mixed ration on milk and methane (CH4) production in dairy cows. Eleven Holstein dairy cows were reared in a bam with an automatic milking system (AMS). For the first three weeks, cows were fed a control partially mixed ration (PMR, CI) containing a commercial feed. For the subsequent two weeks, cows were fed a test PMR (RK) containing RGS and KP, substituting for a part of the commercial feed in CI. For the final three weeks, cows were fed the similar control PMR (C2) as CI. CH4 production was estimated by a sniffer method determining CH4:C02 concentration ratio in spot gas samples collected from the air around the muzzle ofcows at milking in AMS. Although dry matter intake and fat corrected milk (FCM) yield for RK PMR did not differ from those for the control PMR (CI and C2), milk protein content was higher for RK than for control PMR. Estimated CH4 production per day aswell as per kg FCM were higher for RK than for the control PMR.
