In water treatment systems for recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), large particles are filtered and rapidly removed to avoid mineralization into smaller particles and rapid release of nutrients and biodegradable organic compounds. However, the treatment systems of today leave the dissolved, colloidal and fine particle fractions in RAS. Accumulation of these fractions can be a challenge and there is a need for a more advanced particle removal system. Integrating a membrane bioreactor (MBR) in RAScan potentially improve water quality by enhanced particle removal. In a MBR process a membrane filtration unit is combined with efficient biological conversion of organic material and nutrients in a bioreactor. Membrane filtration is a technology wellsuited for efficient removal of solids, including the colloidal fraction, microorganisms and other particulate material, in e.g. drinking water production and wastewater treatment. The conventional MBR system combines membranes with the activated sludgeprocess (AS) and is denoted as the AS-MBR. Our study investigated the integrated biofilm membrane bioreactor (BF-MBR). This MBR concept combined a biofilter using the moving-bed-biofilm reactor (MBBR) with a submerged membrane (pore size 50 nm). This abstract focuses on a study investigating the effect of BF-MBR technology on water quality under production of Atlantic cod larvae (Gadus Morhua L.) and points out future aspects and applications for MBR in aquaculture production.
