Sea lice continue to be one of the main challenges facing the global salmon industry. The interest of using ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) in salmon cages is growing as an alternative to chemical treatments. It offers an environmental friendly and sustainable solution against sea lice. Wild wrasse populations are limited; in contrast the demand for them fin salmon companies is increasing, so wrasse farming has recently attracted great interest. A major bottleneck in ballan wrasse farming is the production of good quality fertilized eggs. Very little information characterizing its reproductive physiology! has been published so far, so broodstock management is based mainly on field observations and on farm trials.
