Farmed fish can escape either through massive escape events due to severe damages in the fish farm facility during a storm, leaking events resulting from bad handling procedures or simply through small holes. It is been demonstrated that differences between wild and farmed individuals of gilthead sea bream do exist, Arechavala et al. (2011) as well as the fact that individuals can adapt to a natural diet, survive for several months and travel tenths of kilometres from the farming location, Arechavalaet al. (2012). Although it is well known that escaped individuals may be recaptured by coastal fisheries, little is known about the fishermen's perception of this fact. Reliable data about how much do these escaped individuals represent to the total catch of gilthead seabream in terms of income and incidence is also scarce. In order to obtain a better knowledge of the fate of escaped individuals regarding coastal fisheries and the market, this study shed light either on which is the relative i) abundance of escaped gilthead sea bream among the total catch of the species, ii) the income that the escaped gilthead sea bream represents versus the total catch of the species and iii) the catchability of escaped gilthead sea bream by different gears.
