The gametogenic cycle and storage tissue cycle of mussels in the Basque Coast show differences between closely located populations and year-to-year dependent variations (Ortiz-Zarragoitia and Cajaraville, 2010), as shown for mussels populations from other regions (Villalba, 1995). These variations in storage tissue are generated by temperature, variability in food supply and in adult individuals by gametogenesis and spawning (Andersson, 2000). However, there is no published data on gametogenic cycle,biochemical composition or seed production potential linked to the timing of seasonal changes in mussel meat content, for the natural populations inhabiting the Basque coast.
