When a fault arc occurs in an electrical installation, the pressure in it increases due to the energy input from the arc into the gas. To control the pressure rise for public safety, wire meshes and/or perforated metal plates are used in actual electrical installations (e.g. MV switchgear) and some of these installations have openings for releasing the overpressure of the installations. In order to clarify the effect of the wire meshes, numerical investigations have been carried out using some complex models (1). In this contribution, using a simple numerical model of a perforated metal plate (2), the pressure rise in a container with a pressure-relief opening is calculated.
