A technique for automatic detection of eyeblink by horizontal (H) / vertical (V) electrooculogram (EOG) under driving environment is proposed. Eight healthy males (21-23 years old) with informed consent participated as subjects. They were asked to operate 4 trials of 50-minute simulated driving and measured H/V EOG. From EOGs, candidate waveforms were extracted then positive (P) and negative (N) peaks were calculated. For eye movement, candidate waveform showed 3 features as follows: (1) the onset of HP was almost equal to that of VN, on the other hand, the onset of HN was equal to that of VP; (2) the ratio of HP/HN was almost equal to that of VP/VN; (3) the value of HP+VN was almost equal to that of HN+VP. If candidate waveform showed none of these 3 features, it was presumed as eyeblink. Then, presumed eyeblinks were compared with manually detected eyeblinks. By applying proposed technique to all subjects in all trials, sensitivity and detection rate were 86% and 92%, respectively. Considering automatic detection of involuntary eyeblink under driving environment, the effectiveness of proposed technique was suggested.
